On column, splitless and Large volume injection
Gaschromatography has been proved to be a suitable method for the determination of mineral oil in soil, sludge and water. To overcome the usage of critical solvents for the environment in FTIR the an analysis method using liquid-liquid extraction and GC analysis was developed (ISO 9377-4 H53).
The extraction liquid can be petrolether, cyclohexane, or hexane spiked with C10 and C40 as integration limits and the extract can be injected into the Gas chromatograph. The hydrocarbon index is calculated from the area which elutes between C10 and C40 after background subtraction. The method is applicable for bigger than 0.1 mg/L water. To overcome the need for a pre-concentration step, large volume injection is possible.
Shimadzu offers a complete solution for the determination of Oil in Water with Gas chromatography.
