Shimadzu Launches LCMS-8065XE
New Triple Quadrupole High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer
Shimadzu Europa GmbH, a world leader in analytical instrumentation and testing equipment, announces the European launch of a new high-end sensitivity mass spectrometer: The LCMS-8065XE triple quadrupole high-performance liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer inherits the core features that have made the success of Shimadzu’s triple quadrupole (TQ) liquid chromatograph mass spectrometers (LCMS): acquisition speed, sustainability, ease of maintenance and high throughput thanks to UFMS (ultra-fast mass spectrometry) technologies while further improving sensitivity and robustness.
Enhanced sensitivity will especially benefit the PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) market where water analysis is now under regulation in many European countries. It also supports a wide range of applications where high sensitivity helps push the boundaries of research and routine testing.
PFAS are widely used in everything from wrapping paper and other daily necessities to semiconductors and other industrial products because of their water repellency, thermostability, and grease-proof properties. They are known as “forever chemicals” that do not degrade in the natural environment, persisting in soil and water sources, impacting water quality and ecosystems. Among the over 10,000 different PFAS, PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) in particular have drawn international attention because they heighten health risks, including the threat of cancer and endocrine disruption. In the EU area, regulations on standard values are expected to be strengthened by 2026. The permitted standards for PFAS in drinking water are particularly strict, requiring detection limits down to the ppt (parts per trillion) level. This has increased demand for analytical instruments capable of high-performance multicomponent simultaneous analysis in the PFAS analysis market, which is expanding year by year.
The LCMS-8065XE is based on UF technologies, Shimadzu’s proprietary ultra-fast measurement technology, with improvements to the ion source and optimization of the detector, resulting in greatly improved sensitivity performance. It provides all-in-one solutions combining PFAS analysis methods and data analysis software. Its latest user support technology additionally reduces laboratory and environmental load. With this product, Shimadzu addresses the need for high-sensitivity PFAS analysis, especially in the healthcare and green domains which are considered sectors of social value creation.
Key features
- Newly Developed Technology Significantly Improves Analysis Performance
In addition to ion focus functionality*1, which was included in previous models, the newly designed stream focus has been adopted for the HESI ion source in this product. By narrowing the diameter of the sample discharge nozzle, the spread of the spray is controlled, heightening the efficiency of the intake of ions into the mass spectrometer. Further, by introducing a new collision cell*2 with an enlarged inlet lens diameter and multiple lenses added, the number of ions transmitted has been increased, heightening sensitivity.
- With the Launch of LCMS-8065XE, Shimadzu Provides an All-in-One Solution Required for PFAS Analysis
Shimadzu’s broad product lineup does not only include LCMS, but also analysis methods, data analysis software, columns, vials, and other consumables.
- The Latest User Support Technology Improves the Operational Efficiency of Laboratories
The Performance Concierge AI function automatically diagnoses the instrument status, supporting analysis under optimal conditions. Additionally, the so-called Ecology Mode, in which the instrument itself monitors usage status and automatically shuts down when appropriate, is built in, leading to power savings of about 30 % over previous models.
*1: Through the efficient intake of ions into the mass spectrometer using fluid analysis and electric field analysis techniques, Shimadzu’s proprietary ion source eliminates contaminants, thereby providing high sensitivity and robustness.
*2: A device for colliding ions in the process of mass spectrometry to cause further decomposition or to obtain specific information.
