Performance without compromise

Shimadzu, a world leader in analytical instrumentation and testing equipment, introduces the Nexera X4, a new modular high-end UHPLC system for laboratories that cannot afford interruptions, reruns or wasted solvent. Combining ultrafast gradients, exceptionally low system volume and enhanced robustness, the Nexera X4 is designed to deliver sharper peaks, more dependable results and greater productivity across demanding analytical workflows. This is the idea behind XPLC – Extreme Performance Liquid Chromatography.

A new meaning of high performance

As analytical demands continue to grow, laboratories are under pressure to process more samples, manage increasingly complex matrices and maintain confidence in every result. In this environment, high performance is no longer defined by speed alone. Laboratories also require stable solvent delivery, low dispersion, flexible system integration and reliable operation under pressure. The Nexera X4 was developed to address these needs by combining precision engineering with advanced fluid control and workflow support tools.

Expanding on technologies cultivated with previous Nexera series models, the Nexera X4 is engineered to achieve ultra-sharp peaks, ultra-fast analysis and ultra-low solvent consumption. Proprietary Nexflow technology minimizes extra-column band broadening while maintaining practical robustness, helping laboratories fully utilize column performance and achieve excellent chromatographic separation. At the same time, advanced solvent delivery and injection technologies support highly consistent gradients, stable baselines and reliable reproducibility, even in rapid gradient and other demanding methods.

Key features at a glance

1. Ultra-sharp peaks for outstanding separation performance

The Nexera X4 is equipped with proprietary Nexflow technology that minimizes system-derived peak broadening without changing the internal diameter or length of the flow path tubing. This supports excellent chromatographic separation while also helping reduce the risk of blockages. By lowering extra-column dispersion, the system enables laboratories to more fully realize the performance of UHPLC columns, particularly in applications where peak broadening outside the column can limit resolution.

A newly designed PDA detector further supports this low-dispersion concept. Its capillary-cell design reduces peak broadening, minimizes refractive index effects from solvents and contributes to stable baselines as well as high sensitivity across a wide concentration range. In addition, a newly designed autosampler supports low-dispersion injection and effective rinsing, making the system suitable for both highly sensitive analyses and challenging high-concentration samples.

2. Ultra-fast analysis with dependable gradient performance

At the core of the Nexera X4 is a binary gradient pump featuring independently actuated plungers and a pressure feedback mechanism. This design improves solvent delivery responsiveness, reduces pulsation and supports highly stable baselines, even during fast gradients and under high-pressure conditions. The result is a system that helps laboratories increase throughput while maintaining reliable retention behaviour and analytical consistency.

To broaden method flexibility, the system can also be paired with a solvent switching and online degassing unit that supports rapid mobile phase selection and more efficient method screening. Together, these technologies help laboratories accelerate development and routine analysis without compromising confidence in the data.

3. Lower solvent consumption through analytical miniaturization

Moreover, the Nexera X4 is designed to support analytical miniaturization. Precise micro-injection, accurate solvent delivery at low flow rates and reduced peak broadening make the system well suited for use with narrow-bore columns. In combination with Shimadzu’s analytical column portfolio, the system gives laboratories broad flexibility for both routine methods and method development. Together, these options help laboratories reduce solvent consumption, lower operating costs and support more sustainable operation without compromising analytical performance.

4. A strong partner for LC-MS and connected workflows

For laboratories combining liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry, the Nexera X4 serves as a high-performance LC front end that preserves chromatographic quality from separation through detection. Dedicated low-dispersion tubing between the column outlet and the MS interface helps minimize post-column peak broadening, while the system’s

precise gradient control supports fast, high-sensitivity analysis with stable and reproducible results. In combination with Shimadzu LCMS platforms, the Nexera X4 supports efficient, reliable workflows for demanding applications such as pharmacokinetic studies and other high-throughput analyses where analytical speed, sensitivity and robustness are equally important.

Beyond hardware performance, the Nexera X4 also supports workflow efficiency through Shimadzu’s Analytical Intelligence concept. The system monitors its own status, helps prevent problems before they affect analysis, and supports high-quality, reproducible data regardless of operator experience. In addition, Open Solution software enables efficient instrument sharing among multiple users, helping laboratories maximize utilization and reduce operational burden.

Moving forward

With the Nexera X4, Shimadzu is not simply introducing another UHPLC platform. It is advancing a broader definition of performance — one that brings together speed, separation, robustness, workflow efficiency and analytical confidence. For laboratories that need to move forward without compromise, the Nexera X4 offers a new standard in high performance liquid chromatography.
