Complete Solution for analysis of e-liquids, e-juices and nicotine liquids

e-liquids, e-juices and nicotine liquids are a mixture of glycerin, propylene glycol, water and different flavors which are inhaled through an electronic vaporizer. Some of them also contain caffeine or nicotine in different concentration levels. Shimadzu provides the full solution for testing of electronic cigarettes and e-liquids in accordance with the The European Union´s Tobacco Products Directive (2014/40/EU) (TPD). The TPD aims to improve the functioning of the internal market for tobacco and related products, while ensuring a high level of health protection for European citizens. The Directive, which is based on the proposal of the European Commission, entered into force on 19 May 2014 and became applicable in the EU Member States on 20 May 2016. The TPD includes limits for nicotine concentration levels, rules for packaging and labeling and guidelines for child protection. Furthermore, manufacturers of e-liquid products are required to submit information about ingredients, emissions and toxicological data.

Determination of heavy metals in flavoured e-liquids using ICP-OES Spectrometry

In order to protect European consumers health, the European Council included regulations for e-liquid products in the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) 2014/40/EU. To limit heavy metal contamination in e-liquids, European Commission directive 88/388/CEE is applied. This regulation sets maximum concentration values for 5 toxic elements: arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead and tin. Moreover, recent studies show that aluminum, copper, iron, chromium and nickel could also be found in e-liquids and e-vapor. A fast and easy to use method for simultaneous analysis of 10 elements (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb) in e-liquids has been developed using the Shimadzu ICPE-9820. This method isable to quantify heavy metals in e-liquids, as well as related raw materials (polypropylene-glycol PG and Vegetable Glycerin VG) and e-vapors.

Analysis of flavour compounds in e-liquids

In recent years the popularity of e-cigarettes and the market for refillable solutions (e-liquids) have grown rapidly. Usually these e-liquids are a mixture of propylene glycol, glycerine, water, nicotine and different flavorings. Beside nicotine, especially the aroma compounds are suspected to be harmful to human health, when vaporized at high temperatures and inhaled with the smoke. Isopulegol, Menthon, Isomenthon, Pulegon and Carvon are some of those flavor compounds typically used in e-liquids. An ideal method for analysis of ready to use e-liquids is using a GCMS/MS system for identification of the components via an automated library search, followed by individual quantification of each analyte.

Rapid Analysis of 2,4-DNPH-Derivatized Aldehydes and Ketones in e-Liquids

An HPLC systems offers ultimate performance for routine QA/QC analysis and is a powerful tool for the determination of main components such as nicotine, caffeine, aldehydes or nitrosamines in e-liquids. Analytical methods have been developed and results are presented for simultaneous analysis of thirteen 2,4-DNPH-derivatized aldehyde and ketone standards run on a conventional 5 µm particle column, and an example of rapid analysis with a 2.2 µm particle column.
